SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) - A day of clay shooting, live music and community support will help fund service dog training for local veterans and first responders. The fifth annual Backwoods Blast takes place Sunday, Oct. 25, at Sarasota Trap and Skeet. The fundraiser benefits Canines For Heroes, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary.Sandra LaFlamme with Canines For Heroes and Jim Berger, commander of VFW Sunshine Post 3233, joined ABC7 News at Noon and the 1 p.m. streaming newscast Monday to discuss the event and the difference service dogs can make. For Berger, that difference is personal. Through Canines For Heroes, his dog, General Ulysses S. Grant, known as Grant, received training to become his service dog.“Grant isn’t just a well-trained dog, he is my lifeline,” said Berger.Berger said Grant helps him navigate daily tasks and stay grounded in stressful situations, giving him confidence and stability as he serves his community.LaFlamme also has a personal connection to the mission.
